Action
Action is one of the most common and vital words in filmmaking. It has several distinct but related meanings. The term can refer to the director’s on-set command. It can also describe the events of the story. Finally, it can define an entire film genre. Understanding each of these contexts is essential for any filmmaker.
The Command: “Action!” 🎬
On a film set, “Action!” is the verbal cue the director gives to the cast and crew. This command signals the exact moment to begin the rehearsed performance for a take. It tells the actors to start their dialogue and movements. It also cues any other on-screen activity. This includes things like vehicle movements or special effects. The director’s call for “Action!” is the final step in a precise sequence of commands. Typically, the First Assistant Director (1st AD) calls out the sequence.
1. First, the 1st AD calls for quiet on the set.
2. They then instruct the sound department to begin recording (“Roll Sound!”).
3. The sound mixer confirms they are recording (“Sound Speed!”).
4. The 1st AD then instructs the camera department to begin filming (“Roll Camera!”).
5. The camera operator confirms the camera is running at the correct speed (“Speed!”).
6. The 2nd Assistant Camera (AC) presents the slate, or clapperboard, and calls out the scene information before clapping the sticks (“Mark it!”).
7. Finally, after the slate is gone, the director calls “Action!” to begin the scene.
The scene continues until the director is satisfied. They then end the take by calling out the command, “Cut!”
The Narrative Element: Action
In a narrative context, “action” refers to the series of events that happen on screen. It is everything that the characters do, say, and experience. Action is the primary way a story moves forward. It is not just about physical movement. It is about characters making choices that have consequences. These choices reveal their personalities and propel the plot toward its conclusion. For example, a character’s decision to open a mysterious box is an action. This action then triggers the next sequence of events in the story. Screenwriters build their scripts around a carefully structured sequence of actions.
The Genre: Action 💥
“Action” also describes a popular film genre. Action films prioritize spectacle and physical feats. The story often revolves around a clear protagonist. This hero must overcome a series of intense physical challenges. The genre has several key conventions. These include elaborate fight scenes, chase sequences, explosions, and daring stunts. While they often contain significant violence, action films are not defined by it. They are defined by their focus on visceral, kinetic, and exciting sequences. The primary goal of an action film is to create a thrilling and fast-paced experience for the audience.
